Parking options in Dartmouth

What are the options

Parking in Dartmouth

Here at Millard Cook, one of the most common questions we receive is about parking in and around Dartmouth. Like any historic coastal towns, Dartmouth faces challenges with parking, especially during peak summer months.

However, there are plenty of options available and with a bit of local knowledge navigating parking in Dartmouth becomes much easier.

Here’s a guide to some parking options throughout the year:

Year-round parking

  • Mayor’s Avenue Car Park (TQ6 9YY):
Located in the heart of Dartmouth, this car park offers approximately 180 spaces and is a level walk to the shops and facilities. It also features two electric vehicle charging bays. Note that it can get busy, particularly between 10 am to 4 pm as well as holiday letting permits. Adjacent to the car park is the Dartmouth Visitor Information Centre and the fascinating Newcomen Engine Museum.

Park & Ride (TQ6 0JL):

  • Dartmouth’s Park & Ride facility is located at the top of the town and provides ample parking for day and week visitors. There are two electric vehicle charging points and a bus service runs to the town centre. Please note that this service is seasonal, operating during peak times and festivals. For current details and pricing, visit the South Hams District Council website.

On-street parking

  • Central Dartmouth:
Using the Royal Castle Hotel by the Boat Float as a reference point, most central on-street parking is restricted to two hours during the summer months (April 1st to October 1st). Around the Boat Float and towards Marks & Spencer, the limit reduces to one hour. Check signage carefully before parking. Additional spaces can be found along Victoria Road and Southtown. In the winter period the parking spaces on the embankment and South Town are unrestrictive allowing up to 6 months, but again, please check as some areas still have hourly visits only.

  • Market Square Car Park:
A small but convenient area offering free parking with restrictions so please check the signage before parking.

Private parking options

For those seeking dedicated parking, there are several privately owned spaces in Dartmouth. Prices for these range from £2,000 to £3,000 per annum. Garages for rent are also available.

Purchasing parking spaces or garages

From time to time, garages or parking spaces are listed for sale through estate agents or private adverts. Prices range widely, from £35,000 to over £250,000 depending on location with premium garages in central Dartmouth commanding the highest prices.

We hope this guide gives you an overview of parking options in Dartmouth. Remember, conditions and costs can change, so always double-check signage and seasonal restrictions.
